Last week, Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) published Jennifer Mol’s article on shortcomings in checking AI errors in professional services. It examines AI use in professional services, including finance and the legal profession, and how professionals can continue to check AI outputs carefully.
Our colleague Julia van Leeuwen, a lawyer at Guldemond Advocaten, shared her views on responsible AI use for the article. She emphasises that AI should not be approached as an ordinary search engine and that its outputs require critical assessment.
“Many professionals make the mistake of using AI as a search engine, which is not what it is. There is often too much trust in the first answer AI gives, even though these systems are designed to make answers sound convincing, even when they are incorrect.”
The article also discusses the role of secondary schools, universities and professional bodies. Julia is involved in the Dutch Bar Association’s AI and digitalisation project group, which works on recommendations for AI use within the legal profession. In her view, this requires a careful approach, precisely because technology is developing rapidly, the profession is diverse and AI is used in many different ways in practice.
